As part of the Romanian - American Music Days, it is my pleasure to announce this special concert-recording, with the ProContemporania Ensemble of Bucharest, winner of the 2003 INMC Award.
 
As part of this project, we will be composers-in-residence with this exceptional group. The instrumentation of the ensemble is:
 
Flute (also piccolo, alto and bass) - Ion Bogdan Stefanescu
Clarinet (also piccolo Cl in Eb and Bass Cl) - Emil Visenescu
Violin - Ladislau Csendes
Cello, Tuba, Percussion - Andrei Kivu
Piano, Accordion, Percussion (one player) - Irinel Anghel
 
Each performer is a true soloist, also a fine improviser.

The selected composers will have the position of Composer-in-Residence at the 2003 Romanian-American Music Days.
 
The concert will be recorded and there will be a limited segments re-recording after the concert. Each composer will receive a CD with the concert and the re-recorded segments, for their own final editing. Composers may choose later a possible CAPSTONE Records CD, at an additional cost.

The Performers:

Andrei Kivu - cellist, saxtuba, euphonium, etc

Born in 1970, he began the musical career quite early and he graduated the Bucharest Academy of Music in 1994. His most important encounter - as a student - was the one with Anca Vartolomei (invited professor in Darmstadt Summer Courses) and a masterclass with Marc Coppey (professor at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Paris). Andrei Kivu appears (as a soloist or with various ensembles) on more than 15 CDs with a wide international distribution (Japan, Brasil, U.S.A. Germany, France, U.K.); he performed and recorded with great artists - such as Siegfried Palm. He performed as a soloist with the Bucharest Music Academy Orchestra,

Romanian Radio Chamber Orchstra, Romanian Radio National Orchestra, Orchestre Royal de Wallonie (Belgium), New Music Orchestra from Katowice (Poland). Andrei Kivu is also a composer; and for some of his music he invented and built several instruments such as : Saxtuba, Tromba Lontana, Panaphonium.

Ion Bogdan Stefanescu - flutist

Born in 1969, he graduated the Bucharest Academy of Music (1993). He obtained a Master of Music Degree at the University of Illinois, Urbana ­ Champaign (1994 ­ 1995) and a PhD at the University of Music from Bucharest, Romania (2001). He studied with Alexander Murray, Alain Marion, Wolfgang Schultz, Pierre-Yves Artaud, James Galway. He performed in many recitals and concerts as a soloist in Romania and abroad: England, France, Spain, North Korea, Germany, U.S.A. and participated in many national and international music festivals and competitions (Praise ­ worthy Diploma at "G.B. Viotti" Contest, Vercelli, Italy, 1st Prize at the "Concertino" Flute Competion, Prague). He plays solo flute in the "George Enescu" Philarmonic Orchestra from Bucharest.

Emil Visenescu ­ clarinetist

Born in 1969 he gratuated the Bucharest Academy of Music (1993) obtaining a Master of Arts Degree for contemporary music in Biel (Switzerland). He studied with Ion Cudalbu, Valeriu Barbuceanu, Aurelian Octav Popa, Stephan Korody, Ernesto Molinari, Karl Leister, Walter Boeykens. Since 1993 he plays solo clarinet in the "George Ebescu" Philarmonic Orchestra from Bucharest. He performed as soloist with many Romanian and Swiss Orchestras. He won 2 International contests for clarinet players : "Aurelian Octav Popa" Competition (Constantza 1994) and "Jeunesses Musicales" (Bucharest 1996).

 

Irinel Anghel - piano, percussion, Khaen, Accordion, Gu Zheng

Born in 1969, she studied composition and musicology at the Bucharest Academy of Music, gaining a Master of Arts Degree for Composition (1997) and Musicology (1995). She is a founding member (piano, percussion, accordion, khaen, Gu Zheng) and director of the "Pro Contemporania" music ensemble. Her compositional awards include First Prize at the Romanian Radio's National Composers Competition (1998), awards from the Romanian Composers' Union (1998, 1999), the Romanian Academy of Arts and Science's (1999) and Second Prize at the "Thomas Bloch International Composition Contest for Glassharmonica (Paris, 2000) as well as a scholarship from the "Pepinieres Europeennes pour Jeunes Artistes" and a grant from "Die Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung". Her works have been performed in Romania, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Israel, Poland, Albania.
